Ubisoft Officially Joins Xbox Disc to Digital – Could SEGA Be Next?

Ubisoft games have gone live on Xbox Disc to Digital, according to an X post made yesterday by XCT.Live, now confirmed by several major outlets including Windows Central.

That means players will be able to dive into digital versions of popular franchises like Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed, with more games being added at the time of writing.

Xbox announced its new Disc to Digital program at the end of last month and it’s now in its testing phase, with over 1,000 games available via the initiative. Uptake has been slow from some publishers, with Sega, Bandai Namco, and Square Enix all yet to get on board.

It’s thought publishers could still be perusing contracts while the program is in its testing phase, and we’re expecting to see more signups soon. According to an X post from XCT.Live, SEGA games could be next to be added, following new errors spotted on a couple of titles.

Square Enix games could also be next in line. The publisher has always shown strong support for other Xbox programs, sch as Xbox Cloud Gaming, so it seems likely it could soon embrace the initiative, which is already popular with players.

Xbox Disc to Digital allows you to play digital versions of games you already own. By inserting a physical disc into your console, you’ll receive a digital license that allows gameplay without re-inserting the disc, and enables you to play across PC, handhelds, and so on.

Those physical discs don’t become useless, though. Sell them or pass them onto a friend and they can get the digital license once they install the game. Your digital rights are removed until you re-purchase the disc.

The Xbox Disc to Digital scheme lands hot on the heel’s of Sony’s announcement of plans to end physical disc production by 2028. So does this latest move from Xbox mean we can expect similar from Microsoft?

The good news it that it looks like our physical Xbox games are safe for now. Microsoft seems to be doing right by players, giving us the choice of physical or digital games and making moves to protect physical media.
