Xbox has shared one of its biggest internal updates in years, with leadership openly admitting the brand has several major issues it needs to fix.
In a new statement released by Xbox boss Asha Sharma and executive vice president Matt Booty, the company acknowledged growing frustration from both players and developers while outlining its long-term vision for the future.
The message made it clear that Xbox believes the gaming industry is changing rapidly and the company needs to adapt.
One main point that was highlighted is that the leadership team admitted that players have become increasingly frustrated with several parts of the Xbox experience.
According to the statement, new console features haven’t arrived frequently enough, Xbox’s PC presence needs improvement, and gaming prices are becoming harder for players to keep up with.
“New feature drops on console have been less frequent. Our presence on PC isn’t strong enough. Pricing is getting harder for people to keep up with. And core experiences like search, discovery, social, and personalization still feel too fragmented. Developers and publishers are asking for more, too: better tools, better insights, and a platform that helps them grow faster.
At the same time, a new generation of players is coming online with different expectations. Their time is split across games, media, and everything else competing for attention. They expect more content in familiar places, want to shape the worlds they play in, and want to create and socialize together, not just play together. These changes are happening as the industry reshapes around us.”
The company also admitted that important features like search, discovery, social systems, and personalization still feel disconnected.
Over many year now, developers and publishers have also reportedly asked for stronger tools and better support to help grow their games on the platform and that is something that Xbox is looking to change moving forward!
Additionally, the statement went and Xbox then highlighted how player habits are shifting in this year and into the future.
A newer generation of gamers is spending time across games, streaming platforms, social media, and other forms of entertainment. Many players now want experiences that allow them to create content, connect with others, and play across multiple devices. And overall the company believes these changing habits are reshaping the industry.
“Xbox will be where the world plays and creates. We will build a global platform that connects players and creators everywhere. Console is at the foundation, delivering a premium experience, and cloud brings that experience to any device. You can play where you want, and your games, progress, friends, and identity stay with you across console, PC, mobile, and cloud.”
They continue by stating that console gaming remains important, but competition is becoming increasingly aggressive on PC, while subscription services continue to grow.
Because of this, leadership said the old business model may no longer work moving forward.
Ultimately Xbox says that its future is focused on making Xbox available wherever players want to game.
According to this new note put out today by the Leadership Team:
- Console will remain the foundation
- Cloud gaming will expand access
- Players can game on any device
- Progress will carry across platforms
- Friends and identity will stay connected across devices
Xbox is basically stating that it wants to create a platform that feels connected whether players are on console, PC, mobile, or cloud and to me that sounds incredibly exciting as a long time fan.
A point which I feel has been neglected for quite some time has been the affordability of Xbox Consoles, Game Pass and just gaming overall and Xbox have now also stated that this will play a bigger role moving forward.
The company wants gaming to feel easier to access while giving players more flexibility in how they enter the Xbox ecosystem.
“Xbox will be built to be affordable, personal, and open. We will offer flexible pricing so it’s easy to get started and keep playing. The experience will adapt to you, letting you customize how you play, helping you find what you’ll love, and connecting you with the right people. And we will be open to all creators, from individuals to the largest studios, giving anyone the tools to reach a global audience and keep their games growing over time. Our new north star will be daily active players.”
This means they also want experiences to feel more personal while helping players discover games and connect with others more easily.

Additionally, Xbox has now also outlined four major priorities for the future:
- Deliver Project Helix
- Lead in performance
- Expand console and PC gaming support
- Grow Xbox’s portfolio
- Expand into more global markets
- Reach new audiences
- Improve player experiences
- Improve creator tools
- Fix platform frustrations
- Strengthen Xbox Game Pass
- Improve long-term sustainability
- Focus on business growth
Leadership also confirmed it plans to reevaluate several areas moving forward, including:
- Exclusivity
- Release timing
- AI
While no major details were shared, this could lead to significant changes in how Xbox releases games in the future and as an Xbox gamer for many year, im hoping this might mean we are finally going to see some competition yet again within the console space.
The statement also revealed that the “Microsoft Gaming” name is being dropped in favor of simply using Xbox. As someone who never liked that old branding, I am so happy that we are going back to just Xbox.
Both Asha and Matt stated that as a challenger brand, the company needs to move faster and become more self-critical and they will need a new ‘pace, energy, and level of self-critique thart should feel uncomfortable’
The company shared ten principles it wants employees to follow moving forward:
- Earn every player
- Protect our art
- Stay rebellious
- Progress over perfection
- Signal over ceremony
- Core before more
- Outwork the problem
- Speed is learning
- Makers over managers
- Clarity is kindness
Personally, I think this was one of the most honest updates Xbox has shared in a long time and it hits the nail on the head of how they have strayed the path for so many years. It now seems Xbox are wanting to correct their ways.
Rather than pretending everything is fine, leadership openly acknowledged the platform’s issues and laid out a plan to fix them and I commend them for actually taking acountability instead of shifting the blame or ignoring it altogether.
Now the biggest challenge will be execution and whether Xbox can deliver on these promises but I do have faith in Asha & Co moving forward!
